Fall is in full swing around here and even though we took advantage of the final days of warm weather and sunshine at the beach cottage for a week of fun and boating, I’m so excited to get back to fall. The trees are starting to change and the nights are getting cooler making it feel like the season is finally upon us.
With our long trip, I’ve been struggling to keep up with posting but today I’m really excited to share with you what I’ve been doing in our family room for fall.
It started with the white vignette under the TV. This spot is opposite our fireplace and is often a place I ignore when it comes to decor because there isn’t a lot of space below the TV. when it came to planning my fall decor however, I knew I had the perfect thing. This vintage metal green trough has been around for a while and something I usually pull out for Christmas since it’s long enough to feel substantial on our enormous dining room table.
I stuffed it with a fall garland with deep greenery, white pumpkins and accent flowers and that set the tone for the rest of the decor on this cabinet. White porcelain pumpkins flanks one end while one of my lanterns accented with white faux gourds flanks the other. It’s the perfect, low vignette on this side of the family room.
Moving to the fireplace, I kept things a bit simple so there felt like some balance between the two sides of the room. I mixed two garlands for a fuller look and then did mix matched candle pedestals with small pumpkins on top in various sizes on either side of my mirror.
The mantel is always a challenge for me to decorate so I find that keeping it simple is easiest. This year’s fall mantel is simple but just enough color and texture to make it interesting.
On the sofa, I’ve mixed pillows in plaids and flowers. The pottery barn plaid pillow covers are classic and are the perfect colors for fall. My embroidered pillows are new this year from Kirkland’s and they go perfectly with the plaid. Be warned however, that the photos online make them appear to be white with almost pastel flowers and greenery. The colors are much darker and fall-like in person.
On the dresser behind the sofa, I went a little overboard but I just couldn’t help myself. After starting to put things together, I remembered seeing a box in our basement that I thought had some silk flowers left over from our wedding 19 years ago. When I dug into that box, I found many more flowers than I realized where there and things kind of took off from there.
Not the simple and easy look I thought I was going for, but beautiful all the same.
Another unplanned addition I made to the family room was this fall foliage filled basket hanging on the doors of the antique secretary in a forgotten corner of our family room. This corner often gets a little messy for photos from day-to-day life but I felt like it needed a little autumn anyway.
One of my favorite additions to our family room this fall is my stacked baskets in place of an end table. While not my own idea, these baskets from Pottery Barn not only look great but they are currently serving as the perfect storage spot for my stash of fabrics for projects I have planned.
I ordered these a couple of months ago and they had been on backorder for some time so I was thrilled when they arrived just in time for my fall decorating.
That’s it, our warm and classic fall family room. I had planned to do a few more things but sometimes you have to focus on the positive and let the rest go.
