Spring officially made its debut on Saturday and while I have started decorating our home for spring, I’ve been taking my time this year and really trying to enjoy the process from adding to my existing decor to tackling some fun DIY projects. My entire spring decor theme started with the coffee table so today I’m sharing with you the first bits of spring decor in the family room – the coffee table edition.
A coffee table, especially an upholstered one, can be tricky to decorate. I have found that with our upholstered coffee table, it’s best to use a tray and I like this idea because it keeps everything neat and organized even if I don’t want it to look overly staged.

Before I get into my spring coffee table, I thought I would share with you a few of my top tips for decorating any coffee table.
Coffee Table Decorating Tips for Spring
- Look High and Low: Whether using a tray or not, when decorating your coffee table, you want to make sure that you vary the height of the objects that you are using. When everything is all the same height, nothing becomes the focal point and your eyes don’t know where to go first.
- Odd man in: The easiest tip of all is to decorate in 3’s or an odd number that makes sense. Visually odd numbers look the best and it keeps your decor from looking too symmetrical. Odd numbers tend to look more visually interesting so if you aren’t sure, remember to decorate in 3’s.
- Contrast is Key, but…: When decorating your coffee table, add contrast through color, texture and finish. Mix books with glass vases with metal or woven materials to add visual interest. Same goes with your colors. Avoid using items that are all the same exact color or very similar in color. Creating contrast through color and texture will give your coffee table the perfect, layered, “i just threw these things together and they look fabulous” look you want.
- Contrast is key, but keep your color palette simple. Even though you want to avoid using items that are all the same color so your coffee table doesn’t look flat, you also don’t want to use too many colors. Come up with a color palette that includes just a few colors and then stick to it making sure that every element you use is one of your chosen colors.
- Look at Every Angle: Whether decorating your coffee table with a tray or not, it’s important when putting your decor together to make sure it looks good from every angle because you’ll be seeing it from every angle. Arrange your decor items so that they look good regardless of where you are seeing them.
My Simple Spring Coffee Table
For my spring decor this year, I’ve been drawn to pale greens and buttery yellows so that’s the palette I stuck to. I combined pale green, buttery yellow, white and a few black accents to ground the decor and create contrast.
As I pulled out my spring decor I realized that I had so little so the sweet white pitcher and tall green vase are new additions from Hobby Lobby. I’m in love with them both and how they don’t really match but somehow “go” with everything else.
The cute little birds are also from Hobby Lobby. I guess in addition to green this spring, I’m also having a moment with birds. (Stay tuned for my powder room update this week and you’ll see what I’m talking about.)
I snagged these faux flowers on Amazon and I want to order more. For inexpensive silk flowers, they are really pretty and go perfectly with my vignette.
The tray is older. I snagged it on clearance at Target from the Magnolia collection a year or so ago but this is similar. I’m currently on the hunt for a basket tray for a softer look. I have my eye on this one and this one.
I’ve been playing around with a couple different versions of my coffee table so you may notice that it’s not the same in all photos. I haven’t yet decided which version I prefer more so I’d love to know what you think.
This is what is so great about decorating though. Nothing is every set in stone. You can always change things again and again until you get it right. That’s why taking my time to decorate is what I prefer to do.
