Safer Spring Cleaning for a Safe and Happy Home

At Home· Cleaning & Organizing· Lifestyle

As I begin to work through my Spring Cleaning projects, I have been thinking more and more about all of the harsh chemicals that I use to clean with.  It’s been on my mind lately as I’ve wanted have a safer spring cleaning experience for myself and the family. Over the past year or so, I have been slowly replacing all of the old cleaners that I’ve used forever with products that are safer for my family and our environment.

A few years ago, between Christmas and New Year, B and I were both off several days.  He loves to take advantage of his time off with sleeping in but I’m a morning person no matter what.  I got up early with the dogs and went about my morning routine only to discover that someone had managed to get into the sink cabinet in our kitchen and chew up a box of Decon.

Because I didn’t know who was the guilty culprit, we loaded all four dogs into car and went to the Emergency Vet Hospital.  $1000 later and four puking dogs from the meds and charcoal, we discovered who our thief was and luckily everyone survived.

After that experience we of course were much more aware of making sure all cabinet doors are fully closed. We also took a good long look at the chemicals we are bringing into the house. While I’d love to someday try making some of my own cleaners, for now I’m sticking to things I can buy so today I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite products for safer spring cleaning.

Method Squirt + Mop Wood Floor Cleaner for Safer Spring Cleaning

I’ll start by saying that this stuff has the most amazing smell!  It’s almond, but it’s so warm and homey smelling. It kind of makes me happy.

I also really love how easy this is to use.  I spray it down and wipe the floors clean. No need to drag around a bucket and mop.  It cuts my cleaning time down and I never worry that I didn’t get the floor clean.

Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner for Safer Spring Cleaning

I’m fairly new to Mrs. Meyers products but I have to say that after I tried this cleaner, I was hooked!  Mrs. Meyers products in general have unique smells that are fresh. This everyday cleaner in Lemon Verdana is an absolute favorite.  I actually keep this out on my counter and use it every day both in the house and in the shop.

I love that I can use it on any hard surface which means that I don’t have to use 2 or three different products to clean up every day and as a designer, the labels make these products pretty to look at.

AmazonBasics Microfiber Cleaning Clothes for Safer Spring Cleaning

My grandmother always cut up old towels and t-shirts to use for cleaning and my mother-in-law still does that.  I did the same until I tried microfiber clothes. With the abundance of dog hair in my world, I have found that these help pick up the hair and fuzz the dogs leave while giving my surfaces and good, streak-free finish when I clean.

I actually use these for everything from wiping down counters and tables to my floors and wet dog feet when they come in from outside. And the best part is that once used, I can throw them in the wash and they come out good as new.

Mrs. Meyers Clean Day Laundry Detergent for Safer Spring Cleaning

Just like being more aware of the things I use to clean the surfaces in my home, I’ve also been more aware of the things I use to clean our clothes.  I’ve been a Tide Pods fan for years and while I don’t have any complaints about them or how they work, I just really wanted to remove as many harsh chemicals from our home as possible and support brands that are doing what they can to help our environment.

While not as convenient as the pods, the Clean Day Laundry Detergent does it’s job and leaves our clothes smelling fresh and feeling clean.

Ecover Stain Remover for Safer Spring Cleaning

Finally, while we are on the subject of laundry, I have also recently replaced my old stain remover with this.  The Ecover Stain remover not only does an amazing job at fighting stains, it also doesn’t have the harsh chemical smell that my old stain fighter did. It seriously is a great product. The soft bristles help to really get the stuff into the stain so it can do its job.

Spring will soon be here

…and I’m excited to be cleaning and making the house feel fresh and new just in time for warmer weather. While spring cleaning is good, safer spring cleaning is better so if you’ve been wanting to try some less harsh ways to get your house ready for spring, I hope I’ve given you a good place to start.

Every little thing we can do to eliminate hard chemicals from our lives will not only make us healthier but we will be supporting companies that care about how we live and treat our environment.

cozy and festive Christmas bedroom in red

5 Ways to Transition Your Decor from Fall to Christmas (Without Feeling Rushed)

There’s something about a cottage-inspired home that instantly feels welcoming. Maybe it’s the layers of soft fabrics, the warm glow of a lamp in the corner, or the way everyday items are displayed with charm. To me, “cozy” doesn’t mean cluttered — it means creating a space where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple beauty of home. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few essentials that always make our home feel inviting and comfortable. These cozy touches are timeless, affordable, and easy to add no matter the size or style of your home. 🛋️ Soft Layers & Textiles Nothing says cozy like a stack of pillows and a throw draped over the sofa. I love mixing neutral tones with subtle patterns — florals, stripes, or checks — to create that layered, collected look. In bedrooms, a quilt or coverlet at the foot of the bed adds both charm and warmth. Image Suggestion: Wide shot of your living room sofa with throws and pillows layered. Pin-worthy vertical image. 🕯️ Warm Lighting Overhead lighting can feel harsh, so I rely on lamps, sconces, and even candles to create a warm glow. A cottage-inspired home shines with layered lighting — the soft glow of a lamp in the evening makes a room instantly more inviting. Image Suggestion: Close-up of a side table with a lamp, book stack, and candle burning. 🌿 Natural Elements Fresh flowers in simple vases, a basket by the door, a vintage wooden bowl — natural elements bring warmth and texture to a cottage home. Even faux greenery works if you mix it thoughtfully. Image Suggestion: Seasonal arrangement on your entryway table or kitchen counter (sunflowers, hydrangeas, or eucalyptus in fall). 📚 Personal Touches Books, artwork, and vintage finds tell your story. A stack of well-loved novels, a thrifted oil painting, or a collection of blue-and-white dishes make a space feel lived in and personal. Cozy isn’t about buying new — it’s about surrounding yourself with what you love. Image Suggestion: Styled bookcase or coffee table vignette with books + art + personal accents. 🧺 Comfort Underfoot Rugs are one of the easiest ways to add coziness to a room. I love mixing a natural jute or sisal rug with a smaller patterned rug layered on top. It adds instant warmth and that collected, cottage feel. Image Suggestion: Angle of your living room or bedroom showing layered rugs. 🍵 Kitchen Comforts A cozy home isn’t complete without the kitchen. For me, it’s having a favorite mug for my morning coffee, simple linen towels, and a candle flickering while I cook dinner. These small details make the everyday feel special. Image Suggestion: Coffee setup with mugs + candle + linen towel. Conclusion At the end of the day, creating a cozy cottage-inspired home isn’t about following strict rules. It’s about layering soft textures, adding warm light, and filling your rooms with pieces that feel personal and meaningful. These cozy essentials are what make our house feel like home — and I hope they inspire you to create the same in your space.
