I’m convinced Mother Nature is a little confused right now with COVID-19 because we’ve had more winter the past couple of weeks than we did all winter. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but it’s close and it’s made it difficult to get a lot done outside. Between cold mornings with snow to lots of rain, B and I have managed to squeeze in a few projects in the backyard while we’ve been quarantined and I thought today would be a good day to share some of those projects with you.
If I’m being honest, these yard projects have been the only projects I’ve been really into laterly. I’m still struggling with motivation and the drive to stay busy with all that is going on. Watching my business come to a halt hasn’t inspired me to keep going.
Even though we still have plenty of flooring to lay upstairs, we’ve both been itching to be outside. It’s Spring after all and after a long winter of being cooped up inside on top of quarantine, we are ready to stretch our legs and breathe in some fresh air.
A New Shed Door
It started with finally adding a door to our garden shed. I’m embarrassed to admit that after two years with nothing but a tarp, we finally have a real door. We went back on forth on what kind of door to do and even though I’m not in love with it just yet, the door is a major improvement over the tarp!
We will have trim to add on the door as well as around the window and edges of the shed and eventually it will be painted. More on that later.
A New / Small Garden
The next project was the garden. If you recall from all our yard work last year, we fully intended on doing a small garden to replace the larger one we removed but we never go around to it. With B buying a boat last year, and wanting to spend as much time using it, we let a few of the yard projects go.
Wanting to plant a least a few things, we built a few simple garden boxes and placed them closer to the garage.
I spent some time cleaning up inside the new garden area too. I cleaned out the dead raspberry branches and tried to tame the grapes. As much as I love the idea of the grapes, we don’t use them like we do the raspberries and I’m still debating on removing them altogether. If you have any suggestions on what to do with Concord grapes each year I’d love to know so I can justify keeping them.
Garden Fence
To keep the boys out of the garden, we knew we wanted to do some kind of fence. The fence we had around our old garden was ugly and not very sturdy so after much debate about building or buying fencing, we decided to order a few pre-made fence panels from Lowe’s and in just a couple hours we had a brand new fence.
Upcoming Projects
With the new garden fence in place, we are now ready to add flower beds to the other half of the yard. I have a few plants coming from Burgess at some point and we just picked up a dogwood tree that hopefully will help add a screen between us and our neighbors down the road.
Sadly with everything going on right now, I may not be able to add all the plants to the new beds and around the pond like I’d hoped, but I’m doing my best to be thankful for what we do have.
In addition to planting, I also have a few ideas for some buildable projects that I’m working on. One is a little garden tool hut and the other is a privacy screen for just outside the back office door. more details on these two projects later.

Thursday I’ll be sharing a super simple, real life pantry organization project that B and I tackled in just an afternoon. This is a little project we did a while ago that I have been wanting to share so I’m excited about that and it may even give you something to do with your family while still under quarantine. Stay tuned for that.
