Quick Updates: Picking an Accent Color for the Mudroom

At Home· Home Decor· Laundry & Mudroom· Paint Colors

When it comes to decorating and perfecting your home, the best advice I can give is to take your time.  Live in your space long enough to truly know what you want and need so that you home becomes the happy, relaxing and functional space you need to make your life better.

We’ve lived with our mudroom the way it is for about a year and a half now and while it’s still a great space, I’ve been feeling like it needs a little punch of color that can’t be added with decor alone.  I tend to prefer cooler colors but with the beach cottage getting all the blues, I’ve been wanting to steer our full time home in a different direction so that when we do stay at the cottage, it feels like a vacation.

Even with wanting to take our home in a different direction, there are some blues that are here to stay like the laundry room sink tile. This little pop of color still feels right but the other side of the room needs some color to balance things out.  Wanting to avoid more blue, I started thinking about finding a complimenting green instead.

I had originally planned on adding a moody green to our guest bathroom upstairs (a space I’ve never shared before) but that project has been put on hold for the time being because we have way too many other things going on.

The greens I have in mind for the bathroom don’t really apply to the mudroom but at least for now, this small update may fulfill my need for green for the time being.

As I usually do, I started by researching some green options online.  Colors online are almost never the same as in real life so I always just use this as my jumping off point.  I narrowed my options down to about 6-8 colors and then went to the store to find my swatches.

This is always a big step because once you see swatches in person of the colors you think you like, you’ll often be able to eliminate a few more.  For me, this was the case  and even though I’m showing you all of them here, you’ll see the ones on the left are what I was able to narrow my options down to.

At this point, it never hurts of get some actual paint samples and paint some patches on your wall looking at the colors in all kinds of light.  For this project, I’m skipping that step because for me personally there is a clear winner.  I also got opinions from B and my Mom who also picked the same color without hesitation and without knowing what my choice was first.

I can’t wait to show you what we picked and the end result!
