As we continue to make progress on the kitchen and dining room renovation project, we are starting to see what living is going to be like in our home. We’ve made this old, sectioned off home feel much more open and the living areas feel much more connected. At the same time, it has also opened us up to realizing that with the rooms more open to each other, it’s time to give our tired family room a much needed makeover.
A couple of months before Christmas, as we were finally settling in to using our new kitchen, I mentioned to B that we should seriously start thinking about finally getting nice furniture for our family room that we are proud of when we have company.
It was a pretty easy discussion and we ultimately decided to forgo buying each other Christmas gifts and instead invest in new furniture. After initially thinking we wanted a sectional, we quickly realized that while our room is a pretty large space, it’s not really laid out in a way that is conducive to having a sectional.
We love the whole farmhouse look with a coastal feel but we do both lean a bit on the modern side so when it came to finding a style of sofa that we’d both love, we felt a little lost. We didn’t want a full set of furniture that felt too matchy-matchy but when piecing together different furniture, we feared it would look too mismatched.
After shopping around for a few weeks, B found a sofa that he really loved and I had resigned to the fact that I had no idea what I wanted except something quality so we ordered it.
When we got the call last week that the furniture is ready to be delivered (early), I knew I needed to start figuring out what other accent furniture we were going to need to finish out the room.

With three dogs and our casual lifestyle, I wanted sturdy furniture. As much as I love an elegant, slender leg on a table, we needed pieces that will stand up to getting bumped around.
I found what has kind of a rustic / coastal feel that I’m hoping will tie in to a few vintage pieces we plan to keep.
The hardest part for me was the rug. We need to replace the one we have and with so much grey going on, I was really torn about going neutral or finding something with more colorful. After going back and forth, I found what I think is a happy medium so now I’m really anxious to see it all come together.
