My Health Journey: Setting Goals and Finding Motivation
Over the years, I’ve come to realize that health is about so much more than just a number on the scale. It’s about feeling strong, energized, and confident in my body. While I have a long-term goal of losing around 70 pounds, this journey is about so much more than weight. It’s about creating habits that support my physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and building a lifestyle that feels sustainable and joyful.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed about starting your own health journey, you’re not alone. I hope sharing my story and goals inspires you to take that first step, no matter how small.
Why I’m Focusing on My Health
For too long, I’ve let excuses, busy schedules, the needs of others, and insecurities keep me from prioritizing my health. As this new year kicks off I know that the time has finally come to start prioritizing myself and make a change. My joints ache, my energy is low, and I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been. I want to feel good in my own skin again and not feel so sick and tired all the time. This isn’t about quick fixes or crash diets—it’s about building a lifestyle that allows me to thrive. I’m not taking a shot, I’m not joining some expensive program, I’m making changes to my lifestyle on my own to be a better me.
My Goals for This Health Journey
Instead of focusing solely on the scale, I’m setting goals that encompass my overall health and well-being. Here’s what I’m working toward:
1. Moving More
Movement is an essential part of feeling good, and I’m starting small and building up over time. My goal is to gradually work up to:
- 10,000 steps per day: This is a manageable, everyday way to stay active and build stamina.
- Strength training a few times a week: I want to build muscle, increase my metabolism, and feel stronger in my body, especially as I age.

2. Mindful Eating
Instead of restrictive dieting, I’m focusing on fueling my body with nutrient-dense foods that support my goals.
- Higher protein and fiber: These keep me fuller longer and help stabilize my energy throughout the day.
- Listening to my body: Eating when I’m hungry, stopping when I’m satisfied, and making mindful choices.
- Drinking more water.
- I’m also going beyond my weekly meal planning to even doing meal prep so that there is no excuse for eating right no matter how busy life gets.
3. Tending to Mental and Emotional Well-Being
A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body. To support my mental and emotional health, I’m committing to:
- Daily mindfulness practices: Journaling, meditation, or simply taking a few minutes to breathe and reflect.
- Prioritizing self-care: Ensuring I have time to recharge and focus on things that bring me joy.
- Making time to read.
- Putting an effort into my appearance again. I get dressed daily, do something intentional with my hair and even wear some makeup if I feel like it to boost my confidence.
Finding Motivation and Staying Consistent
Starting any new journey can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found a few strategies that help me stay motivated:
- Setting Small, Achievable Goals: Instead of focusing on the big picture, I’m breaking my journey into smaller milestones. I started tracking my daily steps again and have been shocked at how few I get on a daily basis. Starting small and increasing my step goals each week is one example of how I’m doing this in my own journey.
- Tracking Progress Beyond the Scale: I’m celebrating non-scale victories like increased energy, better sleep, and improved strength. While weight is important to my overall health, joints, etc. I know that I didn’t gain weight overnight so it’s not going to go away overnight either. Finding other details to focus on in addition to the scale will help keep me motivated.
- Creating Accountability: Sharing my journey here on the blog not only helps keep me accountable but also allows me to connect with others on a similar path. I know I’m not alone out there. Especially for us middle-aged women going through major life changes in our bodies and realizing our bodies aren’t what they used to be.
