I’m so excited to be sharing with you the reveal of my brother’s bathroom project. I was able to get into their house for just a few minutes to snap a few photos so while there wasn’t time to style the space to perfection, I think it’s pretty clear that their bathroom turned out beautifully.
In case you want to see where this project started, I shared the initial design inspiration boards that I gave them based on the look they were going for a little while back.
B and I completely demoed and put back their bathroom in about three days which felt like a marathon but the end result is actually even better than I think I pictured. They are certain over the moon about it being the first space they have actually renovated in their house after living there more than 15 years.
I’m honestly champing at the bit to get my hands on their house again. There is so much potential! I digress.
Today it’s all about their bathroom. Their 1960s ranch has just this one bathroom so it was important for them to make it function and beautiful for them but also nice for guests as well.
As I shared before, the space is tiny. Actually too small for today’s code but we did what we could with what we had on their budget.
The entire bathroom was designed around this stunning vanity. I’ve seen this vanity for sale through a number of retailers under different names but this one came from Home Depot. The cabinet came with the marble top and gold door handles for about $900. The quality is really good and it’s stunning in person. (I apologize for the dog in the photo above. Cooper wanted to help is “aunt B”)
The vanity, though modern, has a traditional feel which is often a bit more stuffy. My brother and his wife are the opposite of formal and stuffy so to balance out the formal feel of the vanity we opted for shiplap for the wall covering. We used the pre-primed shiplap from Home Depot and I will say that while it’s pricey (over $500 for their small bathroom), it was super easy to install. I along with some help from my sister-in-law, installed the entire room.
Instead of going white with the shiplap, I recommended going with this light warm gray color (Sherwin Williams Revere Pewter) It’s a color that I have in my own home and it’s a great neutral that still feels like color. This also brought in some gray for my sister-in-law who originally really wanted a gray vanity. The color reads a little cooler in their bathroom which pairs nicely with their vanity.
We kept the ceiling white because I didn’t want the room to feel any more closed in that it already does.
The flooring was the big question. My brother and sister-in-law were back and forth all the way to the end on whether they wanted a marble-look tile or a wood-look luxury vinyl. They ended up going with the waterproof vinyl but the two they picked were special order items that wouldn’t arrive until after our scheduled construction dates when it came time to place the order. I made the executive decision to go with an in stock option and I think it ended up being a blessing in disguise.
It’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the room and both my brother and sister-in-law say they couldn’t imagine the floor benign anything else. It’s the perfect mid-tone with a lot of gray which pairs nicely with the wall color but still has enough dark in it that the vanity doesn’t look out of place.
For the tub and shower combo, they went with a fiberglass kit unit. That wouldn’t have been my choice but for our short construction timeline, it was much faster than tile. The kit unit they decided on includes optional shelf and basket pieces which I actually really like. All-in-all, this turned out well and it looks really good.
For the faucets, they both knew from the beginning they wanted oil rubbed bronze. I am obsessed with their sink faucet. It’s beautiful! So modern and elegant without looking too formal. I kind of have a thing for faucets!
For my sister-in-law, who really wanted a rustic, farmhouse feel that didn’t look too trendy, I found the perfect light fixtures and vanity mirror. These two items might actually compete with the flooring as my favorite. They are just that good.
They both really wanted lighting on the wall over the vanity. Knowing they loved the oil-rubbed bronze and rustic wood elements, I found these beautiful sconces from Amazon of all places. These are actually really nice quality and include all the elements they both wanted in their bathroom; black metal, rustic wood and a little touch of gold.
One of the last design choices we made was the vanity mirror. The original vanity we picked out from my design plans came with a matching mirror and the one they ended up getting didn’t come with one. Again, this may be a blessing in disguise because I found this stunning mirror at World Market knowing they’d love it and it’s what they went with. At $150, it wasn’t cheap but they both say they are glad they spent the extra money because it makes the bathroom.
The cabinet over the toilet was originally open but B and I are going to build doors so guests don’t have to look at their personal items. It’s a great storage piece but the bathroom would look better with that clutter hidden.
Slowly they’ve been accessorizing the room but have yet to decide on the perfect shower curtain and rugs. I commented when I was there that their towels were the right color already!
