Earlier this month, I shared with you a little recap of everything that I had been up to during my nearly two-month break at the end of last year. One of the projects we completed during that time that I wanted to share in more detail was in the laundry room because it’s one of my favorite places in the house now. So today, I am here to give you a little laundry room reveal + a mudroom update a few months later.
This small space was nothing but floors, walls and ceilings until September with I tackled the mudroom bench project myself. I like to call this my “semi-homemade” mudroom because I purchased a cube style bookshelf and then custom built around it for a more custom, expensive look.

Now that winter is here, it’s proved to be one of the best things we’ve done in this house but the laundry area still needed attention. You may remember me mentioning that we bought an antique janitor’s sink at an architectural salvage yard a year ago. It needed some love which was a project B took on.
The vision in my head was to use an old table as the vanity base and then have open shelving above the sink for laundry storage.
B basically took on the laundry room himself. He custom-built the oak table base for the sink using planed oak boards from Lowe’s. We kept the oak natural and just sealed it. The warm wood tones help balance out all the whites and grays in this space.
I found a beautiful vintage inspired faucet in black which ties in beautifully with the black light fixture base and the coat hooks on the mudroom side. We also carried the black detail through by using simple, black shelf brackets for the shelves above the sink. We used the same brackets above the coat hooks and above the microwave in the pantry.
Once everything was installed, the beautiful vintage sink that B slaved over blended in with the walls way too much and it looked really bland. I made the call to add some tile of some kind to add just a bit of contrast to highlight the sink.
I found this beautiful slate blue penny tile which proved to be the perfect choice. The penny tile look has a vintage, but modern feel that compliments the curves of the sink. The muted color doesn’t feel out of place in the otherwise neutral space but adds enough interest to make this little nook special.
I still want to add a shelf a few inches above the floor to hold some of the things you see sitting down there (and maybe a sink skirt) but for now, I’m happy with the outcome.
B finished things off by installing the crown molding and baseboard trim and we installed a wall heater to keep this room toasty through the winter.
I’m still working on accessorizing the shelves just right (beauty and function), but as you can see I have started with some fun items that play off the color of the penny tile. More on the accessories to come.
On the flip side of the room, not much has changed. I did add this cute black and ivory striped pillow from Hobby Lobby and added a few extra accessories on the shelf above the coat hooks. On the opposite wall, next to the door, I added a small hanging basket and a row of small hooks for keys. I toss my gloves in the basket so I don’t lose them and so they don’t end up becoming a chew toy and having the keys right by the door is super convenient.
