Interior Door Paint Color that’s not Black or White

If you are looking for a way to add character and interest to your home without a lot of work, painting your interior doors may be a great option. It’s common for door to be natural wood or white but what about something unexpected?

You may have spotted the light blue-green door in our pantry area in the photos I shared a while back of our new pantry area area.  The story of the pantry closet door is a fun one but the color wasn’t originally part of the plan.

I’ve been playing around with painting all the interior doors in our house black or dark grey for some time.  I experimented on the french doors in our family room and then after painting our stairs last year, painted a door to our first floor powder room “Iron Ore” to see how I liked it.

I love the color but not for the doors around our home because the color felt too heavy and dark.  I love black and dark details but for doors, it just didn’t feel right but knowing I didn’t want white doors, I decided to hold off doing anything.

When we installed the pantry closet door, I knew it would need to be painted instead of stained.  Black felt too dark for a tiny space with very little natural light but white felt too bland with all the white and super pale grey.

Then one day a couple months ago, I had a random stroke of genius and decided I’d paint the door the muted blue-green color I had originally planned for the walls in the kitchen.  As soon as I started painting the door, I knew it was the perfect decision.

B, who usually says nothing about the “pretty” details walked through and said it’s the perfect touch of color and that’s exactly right.  It feels beachy and adds a touch of color without feeling too heavy or bold and because it’s very muted, it feels like a neutral and will go with the wall colors throughout our home.  

As I slowly work on painting the doors throughout our home, I am more and more convinced this was the perfect choice; a great way to add a little bit our our personality in a slightly non-traditional way.
