How to Style Your Coffee Table: Simple Tips for a Beautiful Look

Your coffee table is more than just a functional piece of furniture — it’s a focal point in your living space that can tie together your entire room’s decor. Whether your style is modern, rustic, or somewhere in between, styling your coffee table can be both simple and fun. With just a few thoughtful elements, you can create a balanced and beautiful look that complements your home.

In this post, I’ll share my top tips for styling your coffee table, no matter your style. These easy-to-follow ideas will help you transform your coffee table into a beautiful centerpiece.

How to Style Your Coffee Table: Simple Tips for a Beautiful Look

Tip #1: Start with a Tray for Organization

Trays are a coffee table styling essential.  It can be anything you love, from a basket to whatever fits your style.  They help contain smaller items, making your coffee table look neat and organized while adding an extra layer of texture and style. Choose a tray that complements your decor — whether that’s a sleek metallic option for a modern space, a wooden tray for a rustic look, or something in between.

How to Style It:

  • Modern look: Try a sleek metal or marble tray like this option from West Elm. Add geometric decor pieces and a candle for a sophisticated touch.
  • Rustic look: Opt for a natural wood or wicker tray like this one from Pottery Barn. Pair it with a small potted plant and a stack of vintage books.

A tray creates a grounded space for your decor, and it’s easy to swap out items seasonally to keep your coffee table looking fresh.

Not sure what to look for?  Baskets and trays are always at the top of my list when I’m thrifting.  Target and Amazon are also great places to find stylish options.  I currently have this beautiful scalloped tray basket in my cart.  This one and this one are also top choices of mine!

Tip #2: Add Layers of Height and Texture

To make your coffee table visually interesting, play with varying heights and textures. This prevents your decor from feeling flat and gives the eye multiple points of interest. A good rule of thumb is to include items of different heights, such as a tall vase, a low stack of books, and a medium-sized decorative object.  Be sure to also play around with size and scale.  Try to vary these for more interest and to create a visual hierarchy.

How to Style It:

  • Height: Use objects like vases, candles, or sculptures to add vertical interest. This modern vase from Crate & Barrel could be a perfect addition to your coffee table.
  • Texture: Mix different materials, such as glass, wood, and metal. For example, a metal tray, a ceramic bowl, and a woven basket create a balanced mix of textures that draw the eye.

When styling with height and texture, make sure to keep things balanced by not overcrowding the space. You want to create a cohesive look, not overwhelm the table.

Tip #3: Incorporate Natural Elements

Adding natural elements, like fresh flowers, plants, or even decorative stones, can bring life to your coffee table and make your living space feel fresh and inviting. The greenery can break up harder textures and add softness to your overall look.

How to Style It:

  • Fresh flowers: A bouquet of seasonal flowers in a simple vase instantly elevates the space. Even a small arrangement can make a big impact.
  • Plants: Succulents or small potted plants are perfect for adding a pop of greenery. Check out this faux succulent arrangement from Target for a low-maintenance option.

If you’re feeling creative, swap out flowers for seasonal accents like branches, pinecones, or dried florals to reflect the time of year.

Tip #4: Personalize with Books and Decorative Objects

One of the best ways to personalize your coffee table is with books and decorative objects that reflect your style and interests. Coffee table books not only provide visual interest, but they also give guests a glimpse into your personality. Pair them with unique decorative objects, like a sculptural piece or a meaningful trinket, for a look that’s truly your own.

How to Style It:

  • Books: Stack 2-3 coffee table books that reflect your interests. You can use a color-coordinated stack for a more polished look. Some great coffee table books include Live Beautiful by Athena Calderone and Homebody by Joanna Gaines.
  • Decorative objects: Consider objects that are both beautiful and meaningful. A small bowl, a candle, or a treasured item from your travels can make your coffee table feel special. Try pairing this brass knot from CB2 with a candle for a touch of modern elegance.

The key here is to find a balance between decoration and practicality. Don’t overcrowd the table — leave some empty space so your objects can shine.

Here are a few of my favorite accessories:  These brass candle holders are currently in my cart along with these battery-operated candle sticks are also in my cart.

Tip #5: Keep It Functional

While styling your coffee table can be fun, don’t forget that it’s also a functional space. Leave room for everyday items like remote controls, drinks, or even a cozy blanket nearby. Style with beauty in mind, but remember that your coffee table needs to work with your lifestyle, too.

How to Style It:

  • Functional trays: Use a tray to corral remotes, coasters, or other everyday items. This keeps things organized and ensures that the space stays neat.
  • Soft elements: If you love to lounge on your sofa, keep a beautiful blanket nearby. Store it in a basket under the coffee table for easy access.

By blending function with style, you create a coffee table that’s both beautiful and practical — a perfect reflection of simple, beautiful living.

Styling your coffee table doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple tips, you can create a beautiful and functional centerpiece that ties your living space together. Start with a tray, play with height and texture, add some natural elements, and personalize with books and decor that reflect your style. And most importantly, remember to make it work for your life.

By incorporating these easy styling tricks, you’ll transform your coffee table into a true focal point that makes your entire living room feel put together.
