Spring is in full swing and as April comes to a close I’m realizing my spring project list was a bit too ambitious for reality. The shop has been very busy which has made it so hard to feel like doing much else and with so many on-going projects going on, things here at home are moving slower than we’d like.
On a positive note, I do feel so thankful that after such a challenging year last year, the shop has been doing so well and I have far less to stress about these days.
Despite our full plate, we have been able to get a few things done around here and that’s what I want to share with you today. Slowly our garden is coming to life and that’s partly because we were able to expand it a bit this year plus add a great little work table to fill up an awkward corner.
Simple DIY Garden Planter Boxes
For starters, our simple planter boxes keep the garden organized and neat and make it easy to get around to tend to the plants. These are so simple to build and require very little in terms of materials. Built from nothing more than 2 x 12 pressure treated lumber and some long construction screws, these take just minutes to build.
We did use brackets on some of them for some extra holding power but you don’t have to.
To build these you will need:
2 x 12 x 10s (2/box)
Long construction screws
Optional brackets
Power drill (mine)
Circular saw or chop saw (mine)
To build, cut each board so that you have a 24” piece and a 48” piece. You can also use longer boards if you want your boxes to be larger. Smaller boards make smaller boxes.
Using the circular saw or chop saw, but the boards to length then using your screws, attach the pieces together. For some extra hold, screw in “l” brackets at all four corners for extra hold.
Fill with dirt. FYI: the 2 x 12 boards are tall so these boxes will hold a lot of dirt. We had a lot of excess dirt left over from when we dug the pond a couple years ago so for us, these were a perfect choice to get rid of the ugly dirt pile.
Easy DIY Garden Table
For the table, we used 2- 4×4 pressure treated posts but in half for the legs. Then pressure treated 2 x 4s for the frame and top. We custom sized this table to fit in the corner of the garden which gives me the perfect spot to plant and work in the garden.
Our garden upgrades for the year are underway. We still have a few things to plant so the added garden box will give us the room we need.
We will need to add stone between the boxes to keep things looking clean and I plan to build a gate.
