When Everything Feels Like Too Much
I don’t know about you, but my to-do list never seems to shrink.
It grows quietly in the background; home projects, personal goals, health changes, things that need fixing, organizing, or simply finishing. Some tasks are big and emotional. Others are tiny and practical. All of them matter.
And yet, after a long workday and carrying the emotional weight of the world, what I usually want to do is simple: come home, curl up with Ozzy, and stay still until bedtime.
That instinct makes sense, but life doesn’t pause just because we’re tired. So this year, I’m trying something different.

The “One Thing” Approach
Instead of tackling everything (or avoiding everything), I’m choosing just one thing a day. One task.
One step. One small piece of progress.
Some days that thing is quick, making that appointment, clearing a surface, putting away a pile that’s been sitting too long. Other days it’s part of something bigger, a project that takes several days or even weeks but at least one step toward completing it.
This isn’t about perfection or productivity. It’s about movement without overwhelm.
Why This Works (Especially Right Now)
The world is emotionally draining. Many of us are living with a low-grade exhaustion that doesn’t go away with a good night’s sleep. Big plans and long lists can feel suffocating when we’re already spread too thin.
Choosing just one thing:
- Keeps momentum without pressure
- Creates a sense of accomplishment
- Helps responsibilities stop piling up silently
- Honors our limits without giving up
Progress doesn’t have to be loud or impressive to matter.
Letting Go of the “All or Nothing” Trap
Some days, the one thing I choose won’t get finished. Some days, I won’t even want to start. That doesn’t mean I’ve failed. This practice isn’t about crossing items off perfectly, it’s about showing up gently and consistently, even when motivation is low.
Life keeps moving forward whether we feel ready or not. This is simply a way to move with it, instead of feeling buried beneath it. It’s been helping me feel like I’m making progress while still giving myself the grace and space I need mentally and emotionally.
An Invitation to Try It Yourself
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, behind, or emotionally tired, I want to offer this as an invitation, not a rule.
Pick one thing today. Not everything. Not tomorrow’s list. Just one thing. Let it be enough.
Over time, those single steps add up, quietly, steadily, and without burning us out.
Moving Forward, Gently
This year isn’t about doing more. It’s about continuing on, with care, intention, and compassion for ourselves.
Some nights will still end on the couch, snuggled up and resting. Others will include a small win you didn’t think you had energy for. Both belong.
