With the arrival of spring, I can see the progress on our house slowing a bit as we become more and more focused on a lot of the warmer weather plans we have coming up. We’ve also been a bit distracted with a super fun project we’ll be tackling that I can’t wait to share with you. Despite our cabin fever, the list of things to do around the house is dwindling down to mostly just the finishing touches. The biggest change recently in the dining room progress is the addition of the beams and built-ins.
We hosted an impromtu St. Patrick’s Day dinner and had a funeral to go to the last couple of weekends so I’m just now getting caught up on the progress that we have made since the last update. As I mentioned, we have installed the lower cabinets along the end wall for the built-ins and this past weekend, we installed the wood beams on the ceiling. Things are coming together!
The Built-in Cabinets
The cabinets are just kitchen cabinets from Home Depot that are white shaker. They aren’t identical but a very close relative of our kitchen cabinets and I am quite confident that when things are all finished, they are going to add quite a bit of value to this new room!
We bought 30” upper cabinets because they are only 12” deep. B built a 2 x 4 base for them to sit on and then installed them much like you would in your kitchen.
For the top, we went back to the specialty lumber company that sold us the oak for our table and bought planed and smooth boards for the “counter” as well as more raw boards to make the wood beams.
The “Faux” Wood Beams
For the beams, we marked out where we wanted them and then screwed 2 x 4 boards to the ceiling.
B built 3-sided boxes out of the raw oak boards leaving the rough edge facing out for a more natural look. Once they were put together, he lightly sanded the wood where there were marks but we wanted them to look worn and natural so we kept the sanding to a minimum.
Before installing them in the room, we sealed them using the same sealer as the floors and table.
When they were ready to install, the beams “wrapped” themselves around the 2 x 4 and then we nailed them into place.
We still have to built out the upper part of the built-in wall and add trim around the door, floor and ceiling. I have some touch up painting to do in here as well and need to order the hardware for the cabinets.
Once that is done, it will be down to accessories and decorating. I plan to keep things simple and clean but want to break up all the blue of the walls with lots of white and natural wood so I’m excited about putting the finishing touches on the room. We feel like it’s turning out better than we thought!
