I feel like we are finally starting to turn the corner at the coastal cottage. The electrical wiring is all complete and our shiplap should arrive in another couple of weeks which will transform the cottage to a nearly finished space!
There are more updates to share with you on the progress at the cottage but today I want to share with you the new front door.
When we first bought the cottage, I was dead set on a dutch door for the front of the house. I know we’ll be spending a ton of time on the front porch and the idea of having it open to the house seemed like perfection.
B wasn’t sold on the idea for a few reasons so in the end, we scrapped that idea. The existing front door was a lovely old door but there was some damage that we didn’t think could be fixed well enough to make it a solid and secure door. I convinced B to find a vintage salvaged door instead of buying a brand new door that didn’t have the same character.
We ended up visiting a local architectural salvage shop and after spotting the perfect matching doors for the bedroom closets, we also found a lovely solid wood door for the front of the house. It is a couple inches too tall for the cottage so the plan was to trim it down.
On the way home however, we got to talking about a pretty door that I bought at an auction a couple years before. I was convinced it was way too short but B insisted on measuring it.
It turns out the door was an absolute perfect fit for the beach cottage. Way too short to be used here at the house but perfect for the cottage. Upset that we just paid $175 for a vintage door at the salvage shop, we decided to go with the door from the auction instead.
The style is a bit different but we really love the glass and how much light it lets into the front of the cottage. It’s solid wood and was never used. B had to build the door frame for it custom but in the end, the door is absolute perfection.
I painted the outside of the door the same Hale Navy as the back door but I’m leaning toward staining the inside. I’ll make my final decision once I see the room come together.
