Ceiling fans; you either love them or hate them. I get it. I have a love/hate relationship with them too. So what do you do when you really want or need a ceiling fan in a space but finding the right balance between beauty and function seems impossible. Today I’m sharing some tips on finding the perfect ceiling fan and what we chose for our master bedroom.
Whether you love or hate how they look, ceiling fans can really be a great addition to a space. Whether helping to keep things cool in the summer or warm in the winter, they can do wonders for circulating air throughout your home and can even save you money on your energy bill!
So if you have decided on adding (or replacing) a ceiling fan in your home, how do you find the perfect one for space? Believe it or not, while design is entirely up to you, there are a few other things to consider.
Tips for finding the perfect ceiling fan
Location is key
Ceiling fans are rated for different locations. Some can only be hung indoors where they will stay dry. Others can hold up to dampness and can be hung in an enclosed porch area while others can actually get wet and can be hung in a pergola or other outdoor location. When selecting a ceiling fan for your space, make sure the fan you are considering is rated properly for where you plan to hang it.
Size (and height) Matters
If you’ve ever looked at ceiling fans, you know they come in a variety of sizes, heights and features. Some are just fans, others have lighting and others barely look like a fan. Regardless of the style of fan you are looking at, be sure you understand the size and height of the location you plan to hang it.

Placement
Choosing the proper fan size for your room and ceiling height is super important but so is the actual placement of the fan in your room. Be sure that nothing will interfere with the rotation of the blades.
For example, we just installed a ceiling fan in my parents’ eat-in-kitchen. We could have gone with a slightly larger fan for the size of their room but they have cabinets on either side of their table and with the upper cabinet doors open, they would have come very close to the tips of the blades. To avoid damage or injury, we helped them pick a slightly smaller fan so they never had to worry about getting too close to the blades of their running fan.
Style
When it comes to the style of a ceiling fan, the choice is all yours. While many fans still lack good design, ceiling fan styles have come a long way and if you spend enough time looking and researching, I have no doubt you’ll find something you love.
In addition to styles, fans come in so many finishes now; from nickel to bronze, all white to wood-look designs. You will have no shortage of options to choose from.
Control Options
The ceilings fans of yesterday had those annoying chains that hung down but today, many of them come with remote controls built in. And, if by chance you choose a fan that doesn’t have a remote built-in, you can buy an add-on that will do the exact same thing. Just be sure to read the remotes to make sure you are selecting the proper one for your fan.
The ceiling fan in my studio didn’t come with a built-in remote and with 10’-2” ceilings, I didn’t want to have a super long chain hanging down so we installed an add-on remote. It works just as well as the new fan we just installed in our bedroom that had a built-in remote.
Our Master Bedroom Ceiling Fan
The ceiling fan we chose for our master bedroom has a very “modern traditional / elegant” look to it. It’s almost a light first and a fan second. We purposely hung it higher off the floor than recommended to be safe but it’s perfect for what we wanted.
The dark blades tie into the doors and windows and will also balance well with our new dark furniture. The “bling” is just enough and I love that it doesn’t look like every other ceiling fan.
In full disclosure, we found this fan in the discount section at our Lowes after looking through their ceiling fans not able to find anything we liked. It must have been an online return because our store doesn’t carry anything like it.
