September has always felt like a fresh start, almost like the start of a new year. Maybe it’s the memory of new school years or the way cooler mornings hint at the season ahead. While January might be the official “new year,” I’ve always believed September is the true beginning, a chance to reset, refresh, and create simple rhythms for the months ahead.
This year, I’ve been leaning into a September reset in small, intentional ways. Nothing dramatic, just little shifts that make our home feel cozier, our routines more grounded, and my mindset a bit lighter. Here are a few habits that are helping me ease into fall without any overwhelm.
Reset Your Home
It doesn’t take much to change the mood of a room. A cozy plaid throw tossed over the sofa, a candle burning in the evening, or a vase of fresh mums from the market instantly brings fall into focus. I’ve also been decluttering small spaces, tackling a pantry shelf or an entryway basket or a bookshelf in my studio, and it’s amazing how much calmer our home feels and it doesn’t take a lot of time.
Reset Your Routines
Summer tends to be a season of flexibility, and while that’s wonderful, I crave more rhythm in September. Re-establishing a morning routine (coffee, journaling, a quick tidy, my solo workouts) helps me start the day with intention. I’ve also been meal planning around seasonal foods like apples, squash, and hearty greens, it makes dinner feel fresh without the stress.
Reset Your Mindset
A reset isn’t just about your home or your schedule; it’s about how you approach the season. I’ve been jotting down small goals for fall, nothing ambitious, just simple projects I put off over the summer, specific reminders to slow down, enjoy the changing leaves, and make time for cozy evenings with family. This is also a great moment to build in rest before the holidays sneak up.
Little Luxuries
One of my favorite parts of fall is the ritual of small comforts. A spiced chai latte in the afternoon, a warm blanket on the sofa, football on a Sunday afternoon. These aren’t big or complicated, but they add up to a season that feels both grounding and beautiful.
If you’ve been craving a reset, I encourage you to choose just one or two habits to start with. Keep it simple, keep it cozy, and let September be a gentle shift into the season ahead.
