When we renovated our kitchen a few years ago, we were beyond grateful to finally have a space that was functional after living with a tiny, dysfunctional layout for so long. But as time has passed, I’ve found myself wanting to make changes—not because I don’t love my kitchen, but because our home and style continue to evolve.
While a full remodel isn’t necessary (or practical!), small, intentional updates can make all the difference in keeping our kitchen feeling fresh, cozy, and truly reflective of who we are. Recently, we added custom cabinets to the other side of our kitchen for extra storage and balance, and this has been the first step in a series of updates I’ve been contemplating.
Today, I’m sharing the details of our newest kitchen addition and what changes I’d love to make in the future—all while embracing what we have and making thoughtful, budget-friendly updates.
We still have some work to do so the walls aren’t repainted yet. We also have some other small details to finish and as we begin yet another project in the pantry on the other side of the room, some of the photos below are from a few years ago because the room isn’t photo worthy right now.
The New Custom Cabinets: A Perfect Addition
One of the biggest upgrades we recently made was adding a small set of cabinets to the other side of the kitchen, just past the opening to the living room.
This addition not only provides much-needed storage and counter space but also helps balance the kitchen visually. The original cabinetry company we used is no longer in business, so B built these cabinets himself to match our existing ones. The benefit of this? We got to customize the size to perfectly fit the space!
So far, the base cabinets are installed, and B has built the doors for the bottom section. Now, we’re working on finishing details like paint, hardware, and organization.
Future Kitchen Updates I’m Dreaming Of
Even though the kitchen is functional and beautiful as it is, I have a list of updates I’d love to make—some sooner, some later, and all without breaking the bank.
1. Repainting the Walls (and Maybe the Cabinets!)
I’m so over the beige walls. While I once loved the neutral tone, I’ve been craving a fresher, more inviting color to bring warmth into the space.
Beyond the walls, I’ve also been debating a cabinet color update. I love the crisp contrast of white cabinets, but over time, I’ve started leaning toward a softer, creamier white—something like Benjamin Moore Alabaster or Swiss Coffee. Swiss Coffee has a beautiful depth, but I worry that in our low-light kitchen, it might feel too gray.
And then there’s the island. Wouldn’t a painted island be such a great way to add a pop of color? I’m considering muted blues, deep greens, or even a warm taupe for something classic but cozy.
2. Updating the Cabinet Hardware
While new hardware can be an expensive upgrade, I’ve been toying with the idea of using Rub ’n Buff to transform the existing hardware into a warmer, brassy gold tone. This simple trick could add an elegant touch without the cost of completely replacing every handle and knob.
3. Rethinking the Backsplash
Our black and white backsplash has been a staple in our kitchen since the renovation, but lately, I’ve been considering something softer and more cottage-inspired. For now, I’m trying to embrace it and find ways to compliment it instead of fighting against it but I’m also looking at alternative options:
- B isn’t interested in removing the tile, so I’ve been researching ways to temporarily cover the existing backsplash for a fresh look.
- Alternatively, I’ve also considered removing the tile and installing V-groove beadboard panels instead. Painting the beadboard a soft, warm color would bring in the cozy, old-world charm I love.
4. Replacing the Window Coverings
We never intended for the plastic blinds and sheer curtains in the kitchen to be a long-term solution. They’re functional but lack character, and with the restaurant next door, we definitely need privacy—especially in the evenings when their outdoor seating area is filled with people.
My plan?
✔️ Swap out the blinds for bamboo/natural woven shades.
✔️ Add a pretty cafe curtain—open during the day for light, closed at night for privacy.
This will instantly make the kitchen feel warmer, cozier, and more polished.
Creating a Home That Feels Like a Sanctuary
With everything going on in the world, I want our home—especially our kitchen, the heart of the house—to feel like a sanctuary. I don’t need perfection, and I don’t need to chase trends. Instead, I want to focus on intentional, thoughtful changes that make the biggest impact without spending a fortune.
This kitchen has already come so far from where we started, and I’m excited to keep making small, meaningful updates that reflect who we are at this stage in life.
I’d love to hear from you—what’s one change you’ve made in your kitchen that made a big difference? Share your thoughts in the comments!
