Summer is into full swing and if you haven’t already, it’s time to get your yard ready for summer fun. Whether it’s landscaping, building a patio, deck or fire pit, putting up a fence or just sprucing up what is already there, there are so many great projects you can do to spruce up your tired yard.
I have never been good at yard projects. I don’t have a vision for it like I do in other areas and yard work has never been a favorite. This year I’ve been really drawn to back yard projects and planting so I thought it might be fun to round up some of my favorite projects for getting your yard ready for summer.
Pergola
I have been imagining a pergola over one of the doors on the back of the house, either off the shop or off the kitchen. I can find plenty of pros and cons for both locations but the idea of adding a little shade with a seating area underneath just seems so perfect.
Pergolas offer a great way to define a seating area or outdoor dining area. They offer a little shade from the sun without making the area underneath too dark. They are great for climbing plants like wisteria or other vine or you can hang fun string lights for evening.
Flower Bends or Planter Beds
Soften all the straight lines of your fence by added a curving flower bed around the perimeter. Use plants of varying colors and heights to add interest.
B and I tried to do this around our fend a few years ago. All our trees died and we never kept it up. I would love to do something like this again and plant some taller trees or shrubs in the back and lower plants and flowers in the front. This will add color to our tiny, bare yard while hopefully offering us some additional privacy from our neighbors.
Fire Pit
Whether you build your own fire pit or create a simple stone or sand area like above for a store-bought fire pit, this is a great way to get outside and enjoy some of the fun parts of camping in your own back yard.
Storage Shed
Whether you purchase a manufactured shed, build one from a kit or design and build your own, a storage shed can actually be an attractive addition to your back yard.
I’m loving this mini shed and am sold that B and I should build something similar for storing our shovels and rakes and gardening tools. It’s just big enough for the essentials which is perfect for a small yard and the stain on this one is so pretty.
No matter what projects you are doing in your back yard this summer, it’s always fun to get inspired. I’m really hoping B and I are able to take some this inspiration to get us moving on sprucing up our very bland back yard. If you aren’t on vacation, there isn’t much better than spending time outside in a beautiful and relaxing back yard.
