Whether you live near the beach, have a swimming pool, or simply spend a lot of time outside, having an outdoor should can be a great addition to your home so that you aren’t tracking dirt, sand and debris all through your house or into your pool.
As things are winding down inside the beach house, and with the arrival of warmer weather, B and I have been preparing for our outdoor projects, including an outdoor shower. For us, having a spot to rinse off sandy feet and paws before coming into the house will be incredibly useful.
We know where the outdoor shower will go and we’ve already begun preparations for it but before we get to the actual building of this feature, I’ve been gathering inspiration and that’s what I want to share with you today.
The one thing I’ve realized is that outdoor showers pretty much run the gamut in terms of styles, sizes and design. Like the beach house, ours will be fairly small and simple but gathering inspiration is always very helpful. Here are some of my favorites:
This might be my favorite. There are so many things I love about this outdoor shower. From the color to the size to the features and overall design. It’s a little larger than we have planned but it’s not huge like some I’ve seen. There is a great bench providing the perfect spot to put down a bag or put your towel. The walls are solid for privacy but there is a panel at the top that is more open which allows air flow and added light.
I also really love the pergola style. It is architecturally interesting making it a nice focal point for any backyard space.
This outdoor shower space is beautiful and feels very natural. The horizontal slats give it a modern feel and the black accents are perfection in my eyes. We don’t have the space for something this size and we have too many neighbors for something open like this but I’m inspired by the simplicity and the use of plants…something I’d like to incorporate around our shower to make it blend in more to the surroundings.
Another simple design but this one stood out to me because, like our outdoor shower will be, it’s built off the side of the house and even though the space is small, they managed to fit a bench by building it in, under the showerhead. This could be a great option for us so that we have a spot to put a bag even though space is limited.
This open shower is really simple but there are a lot of details I really love. For starters, even though it’s built off the side of the house, they have built a cedar wall which pulls the plumbing (and water) away from the side of the house just a bit. I also really love the landscaping around the shower which gives it a more natural feel.
Another thing I notice that I haven’t given a lot of thought to before is the lighting above. I love how the lighting and showerhead mimic each other. I also really love the hand-held feature on the faucet. This is a must for us with the dogs.
The size speaks to me in this example because it appears similar to what our plan is. As I’m sure you can guess, I also am really drawn to the landscaping. I love how the shower is nestled in the bushes. This doesn’t happen over night but it is great inspiration for how we can plant around ours so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
Overall, completely unrealistic for our outdoor shower but inspiration all the same. Our plan is to use the concrete slab that used to serve as our door stoop as the shower base. It’s the perfect size and height, it saves us money and it was already almost in the right spot. It’s perfect but eventually it might be nice to upgrade the surface with tile or a teak mat to make it more comfortable to stand one in our bare feet. I really love the natural stone tile; it’s both durable and beautiful.
My last inspiration photo of outdoor showers is this beautifully tiled stunner! Even though the shower is outside, doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful and special. Similar to the cedar panel wall above, the tiled panel keeps water away from the house and adds a really bold and beautiful design element.
