Beautiful and Easy Artificial Spring Flower Arrangement

Artificial flowers are a great way to add color to your home in the early spring. Plus, fake silk flowers have come a long way.

Spring officially arrived this past Sunday even though the season tends to be a little slow to arrive here in the Northeast and actually feel like spring.  It has been getting a bit warmer and we are finally seeing buds on the trees but we are a ways away from the fresh greens of spring.  Until nature blooms around here, one of the ways to bring in color and the feel of spring into your home is through artificial silk flowers. Today I’m sharing my beautiful and easy artificial spring flower arrangement.

You may be wrinkling your nose at the thought of artificial flowers, but as someone who grew up with a lot of fake arrangements, I can say that fake flowers have come a long way. Growing up, my mom decorated a lot with faux flowers. She still does, even outside! She doesn’t have a green thumb so she can create lovely arrangements and not worry about them wilting.  (Sorry Mom!) 

My mom has always been really good at arranging flowers but even she agrees that Silk flowers used to look pretty fake.  More modern options are getting a lot better.  Leaves still tend to be a pretty clear giveaway, but when the real thing isn’t an easy option, you have to make the most of what you have available.

I’ve been shopping at Michael’s a lot lately mainly for canvases and paint supplies, but I recently found myself checking out their fake flowers and ended up getting an assortment to add some color to the house for Spring.

I also pulled out some that I picked up last fall on clearance to mix in.  I didn’t really have a particular plan in mind but I’m pretty happy with what I ended up with.

To create a similar artificial spring flower arrangement, you will need the following supplies:

• Assortment of fake flowers (mine are here, here, here and here)
• Wire Cutters
• A Vase or vessel of choice.  I used an old planter basket and vases I already had.

The easiest way to create an arrangement is to start with your main flower.  In the case of my arrangement, I used the cream saffron bunches (they are actually white) and instead of cutting them apart, I just folded the base of the stem up. My basket was small enough that one bunch gave me enough “fill” to start with.

I took the time to spread out all of the pieces so that they are evenly distributed throughout my arrangement.  I even folded some down so they appeared to be flopping over the edge of my vase like real flowers would.

The next step is to add in accent pieces.  For this, I clipped apart all the stems from the Daisy and Anemone bush so they could be inserted individually.  I made sure to evenly distribute them throughout my arrangement making sure they faced all directions and again folding a couple down like they were flopping over a bit.  This makes them look more realistic.

Depending on how many different flowers you plan to use, you can repeat this step for other accents you are using in your arrangement.

Finally, add in some extra greenery.  If you have real greenery where you live, your arrangement will look even better with some real thrown in, if not then simply use what you have.  You can always tweak it later.  For my basket, I felt like the flowers were full enough so I chose not to add any extra greenery.

I used the same method for my tall vase.  I’m not entirely happy with this one just yet, but that’s what’s fun about faux, you can always tweak them later if they aren’t quite right.  For this one, i added water to the vase to make it heavier and it helps add some realism to the bouquet.

While I wait for our yard to bloom again, I’ve made a few arrangements around the house which you’ll see more of in my spring home tour.  Even though they aren’t real, adding in some extra color has helped cheer things up a bit and I don’t have to worry about remembering to water them.  They will look as nice a month from now as they do today.
