My Repurposed Nightstand and How I refinished it

Our master bedroom has been one of the many spaces in our home that has never quite felt finished.  It’s been well over a year now since we installed the oak floors and purchased our new furniture yet, there are still several things left on the to-do list that have kept the room from feeling just right.

Specifically, one of the things that was never finalized is a solution for our nightstands.  When we bought our bedroom furniture, we ended up going with a quick and easy fix just to get us by till we found what we really wanted.  Then the Pandemic hit, and we bought the beach house, and it got pushed to the end of our to-do list.  We had these white cube shelves that were the right height and provided the needed storage so we went with them.  I never thought we’d live with them for this long.

After searching online and in stores for about a year for the right nightstands, I came up with the idea of refinishing an old TV stand we’ve had collecting dust.  It’s almost the same dimensions as the cube shelf so I knew that it would fit on one side leaving me with just one nightstand to find.

We bought this cabinet at a local thrift store a couple years ago to use in another room but it’s been in storage most recently.  We are pretty sure it was homemade but done well.  It’s solid wood and the original finish was a rich cherry finish.  It wasn’t bad, just not the look I wanted for our bedroom.

I removed the original knobs (stained wood knobs to match) and then gave the entire piece a good sanding.  After thoroughly wiping it down, I then gave it two coats of black chalk paint.  Once completely dry, I then used black wax over the entire piece to seal the paint.

Instead of using the generic wood knobs that were on the cabinet, I purchased these pretty antique-look pulls from Amazon and they look so beautiful!

To lighten things up, I replaced the bronze lamp I had been using with this mercury glass lamp found on a recent thrift store trip.  I used the same shade as before but plan to recover at some point.

I’m not yet happy with the styling of my nightstand but I am happy with the cabinet itself.  Repurposing something we already had not only saves us money but it also  challenges my creativity.  I see this as a win on both fronts.

I couldn’t end this post without showing you my little helper.  Sweet Ozzy is almost always just outside the frame as I’m photographing and this time was no different.  He watched, patiently waiting for me to finish so that I could then turn my attention to him.  How can I resist?
