Despite the extreme heat throughout the month of July, B has spent just about every weekend working on finishing the side porch roof. It was the part of the porch that needed the most work so we (I) are hoping progress speeds up from here.
The completed roof looks beautiful just like I knew it would. The black metal looks so sleek and fresh with the red brick and now we are slowly getting that roof carried over from the garage to the house.
I don’t know all the details of the work B did but I do know that he needed to do some repair work to the underlying structure. Because of how the roof ties into the solid brick house, B sistered joists to add the support needed for the new roof.
The original room slope was very flat which we thing is part of the problem we eventually had with water sitting up there. Once the underlying structure was supported, he added wedges to the top side of the roof joists to add several more inches to the slope in the hopes that water (and snow) will run off better than before.
Once the wedges were in place, he added bracing in between the wedges so they would stay in place side-to-side. Then he added the cross boards that the metal roofing needs for ventilation and for actually attaching the metal.

He then added the white drip edge along the edges of the roof just before adding the roofing itself.
A new roof isn’t all that exciting but it does mean that all the new construction he’s done to make the porch safe and structurally sound will now stay nice and dry which means we can move on to everything under the roof.
The next step of the process will be some wiring for the new lighting and ceiling fan and then we’ll be ready to add the ceiling.
