Mudroom Project Reveal – 97% Complete

The mudroom built-in is done and I am so thrilled with how it came out.  Having a designated place to drop my purse, B’s laptop bag, etc. means less clutter in other areas of our home and because everything has  a place, it’s less “picking up” that I have to do throughout the week.

You can read about my plans for the mudroom area here and you can find out the details of how I (with B’s help) created this custom looking built-in using a cube shelf and some wood with a few additional accessories like hooks and paint.

I am thinking that eventually I will add a cushion or at least some pillows to soften up the space and add some color but for now, we are enjoying having a spot to “dump” when we walk in the back door.

The reason I am not calling this 100% complete is because we still have some finishing work to the room as a whole including crown molding and some additional trip to cover where the drywall meets the brick.  I don’t anticipate this happening until we finish the laundry side of the room later this year.

It hasn’t stopped me from adding in some accessories around the room to make the room feel more finished.  The shelf above the coat hooks will likely be more about utility once colder weather arrives but for now I’m loving being able to style this area to add some color and personality.

Speaking of personality, the diamond pattern stencil that I used is stunning.  It’s the detail that I think sets the room apart! I didn’t do a perfect job painting the stencil but you can’t really tell and the overall effect is better than I even imagined.

MUDROOM TASK LIST:

  • Finish painting brick above pantry doorway
  • assemble bench cubbie unit
  • modify bench cubby unit to function as the bench base
  • install wood trim for back of bench / coat area
  • build shelf for above coat hooks
  • install coat hooks
  • paint all wood trim
  • Find baskets for underneath storage
  • accessorize
  • paint door
  • touch up door trim
  • seal antique transom beam
  • install light fixture
  • add rug inside of back door
  • paint accent wall
  • find storage container for above washer /dryer

Whether you have a dedicated mudroom in your home or have a small area to carve out a drop zone, this super simple project took just a couple of weekends from start to finish and didn’t cost much of anything (under $200!).  Creating a simple built-in like this adds beauty, character and function to a space that would otherwise be ignored.
