Now that Spring has arrived, it’s the perfect time to get outside and spend some time sprucing up the yard. Spring is the perfect time for planting trees, shrubs and plants, landscaping and more.
Our yard hasn’t received a lot of attention in recent years. We’ve done what we needed to do like mow the grass and plant a garden but nothing beyond that. We built our deck nearly 4 years ago, we took down the small above-ground pool and extended the area below the deck to put in a patio for our fire pit but never finished that project.
Before we get into the heat of the summer and don’t have time with vacations, we decided to take a break from the work inside the house to get outside. We agreed immediately that our priorities are cleaning out the garden (and eventually move it), finish the patio and plant some privacy trees.
The Backyard Tour
The best thing about our yard right now is that it really is a blank slate. The yard was so overgrown when we moved in that we literally cleared out everything except the lilacs. We had a small above-ground pool for a while and had a garden. We added onto the garage and added the shed. We built the deck and started the patio but we never really did anything to “pretty” up the yard.
The Backyard Project List
Take out the gardenand move it to the back corner as a smaller area in beds. (you may notice from some of the photos above that we have already cleaned out the old garden and planted new grass.)- Plant some privacy trees / shrubs along both sides of the fence to add a little privacy from the neighbors.
- Add pond and water feature (You can see we started this project already. Stay tuned for the details in a future post!)
- Add some landscaping to “pretty” the yard
- Finish the patio area with fire pit. (You can read about how we started this project here.)
- Add stone area with Adirondack chairs on other side of pond
- Add some fun lighting to the landscaping
- Install new siding on back of house and paint
- Build door for garden shed and paint entire shed
- + more!
As usual we have a lot going on and sadly that means it often takes us forever to actually finish a project. As we move our focus to the outside and begin tackling some much-needed work on our yard, I hope you’ll find it helpful or inspiring for your own yard projects.
