Modern Farmhouse Backsplash Tile Options

At Home· Home Decor· Kitchen & Dining

21 May

When it comes to selecting backsplash options for a modern farmhouse style, there really seems to be many options that will work.  From patterned options to classic subway tile, it really comes down to your personal design tastes and what you feel will work for you.  This is one of the best things about home decor in my opinion because pretty much anything goes.  If you love it, then it can work.  Styles can be mixed to create the perfect combination of style that fits your families personality and lifestyle.

When it came to our backsplash tile for the kitchen, our intial plan was to keep it simple and classic.  Clean, white subway tile with dark grout was the original plan.  As the kitchen plans began to finalize we decided we wanted to do something with a bit more “wow” factor.

We debated on herringbone, a more modern hexagon tile but settled on a patterned tile with a unique finish.  We are loving our choice but there are so many ways we could have gone so today I’ve rounded up so of my favorite backsplash options perfect for your farmhouse style kitchen!

Simple and Classic Kitchen Backsplash Tile

1.Traditional White Subway Tile | 2.Long & Skinny Subway Tile | 3. Marble Subway Tile |  4. Beveled Edge Subway Tile | 5. Antiqued Subway Tile | 6. Glass Subway Tile

Classic subway tile never goes out of style and it works with many different styles.  If you are one to change your mind or that likes to try new styles, then a simple and classic option may be the perfect way to go.  I tried rounding up neutral options in a variety of styles.  Simple white is forever classic.  The beveled edge option adds a bit of an upscale look.  The long and narrow option has a more modern vibe as does the glass option.  The antiqued option (no. 5) feels more traditional to me but neutral all the same.  Whatever your personal preference, these are great options that will look good for years to come!

Herringbone Kitchen Backsplash Tile

  1. Classic Marble Herringbone | 2 Tone Herringbone | 3. Striped Herringbone Marble | 4. Dark Herringbone | 5. Aqua Glass Herringbone tile | 6. Pearl Shell Herringbone Tile

Another super classic design but with a twist.  Herringbone tile always has a more elevated look in my opinion.  It’s still clean and timeless but dressed up a bit more.  This can also feel more modern and fresh depending on the style of tile you go with.  The marble is timeless and classic just like the pattern while the 2-tone and striped herringbone options have a more graphic feel.  The darker tile has almost an industrial vibe while the glass and shell options feel modern and kind of coastal inspired.

Rustic Tile Basksplash

  1. Distressed Faux Tin Tile | 2. Distressed Subway Tile | 3. Faux Brick Tile | 4. Travertine Tile | 5. Mixed Metals | 6. Natural Stone Tile

For some, farmhouse includes a fair amount of rustic.  Adding in rustic touches keeps a remodel from looking completely new which was something we considered in our own kitchen project.  While rustic can mean different things to different people, to me, rustic often feels distressed or more raw or unfinished so I’ve rounded up everything from natural stone to faux brick pavers to travertine.  The mixed metal tile also fits in here because of the metal.

Patterned Backsplash Tile

2-Tone Medallion |  Star Pattern Tile   | Geometric Pattern Tile  | Distressed Patterned Tile | Moroccan Cement Tile | Multi Color Patterned Tile

Patterned tiles aren’t for everyone and like most of the other options can fit in a variety of styles.  In a kitchen where most of the surfaces are plain, I love the idea of a patterned backsplash (or floor) to add interest to the space.  This is the direction we decided to go in our kitchen opting for tile No. 4.  It’s patterned but a bit distresses so while it’s a statement, it’s not as bold as say No. 3.

Whatever your personal taste, I hope I’ve given you some ideas or inspiration.  While I know there are hundreds, if not thousands of other options I could have included, there are the categories I considered for our own modern farmhouse kitchen remodel.  I’d love to hear your favorites or if there is something you feel I missed.  Leave a comment below and let me know.

What color gray grout do you use with the traditional white subway tile?

Hello! That’s actually a good question but it really depends. Grout is available in a lot of different colors and many shades of gray so I would suggest picking one that compliments the other elements in your space. For example, take a look at the colors in your countertops or your flooring. These are great places to look when you aren’t sure what color grout to use. White subway tile works with anything from white to black and anything in between so my best advice is to find something that is pulled from other elements in your room. That also helps keep everything cohesive and tied together. While brands vary, the product we have used from Lowe’s for example, is available in about 40 colors and gray options range from a dark charcoal all the way to lighter colors like silver and “warm gray”. I counted between 7 & 8 grays so the best way to narrow them down is following what I said above. If you have other questions or need more help, you can email me directly and I’ll be happy to see what I can do to help you. Good luck!

cozy and festive Christmas bedroom in red

5 Ways to Transition Your Decor from Fall to Christmas (Without Feeling Rushed)

There’s something about a cottage-inspired home that instantly feels welcoming. Maybe it’s the layers of soft fabrics, the warm glow of a lamp in the corner, or the way everyday items are displayed with charm. To me, “cozy” doesn’t mean cluttered — it means creating a space where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple beauty of home. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few essentials that always make our home feel inviting and comfortable. These cozy touches are timeless, affordable, and easy to add no matter the size or style of your home. 🛋️ Soft Layers & Textiles Nothing says cozy like a stack of pillows and a throw draped over the sofa. I love mixing neutral tones with subtle patterns — florals, stripes, or checks — to create that layered, collected look. In bedrooms, a quilt or coverlet at the foot of the bed adds both charm and warmth. Image Suggestion: Wide shot of your living room sofa with throws and pillows layered. Pin-worthy vertical image. 🕯️ Warm Lighting Overhead lighting can feel harsh, so I rely on lamps, sconces, and even candles to create a warm glow. A cottage-inspired home shines with layered lighting — the soft glow of a lamp in the evening makes a room instantly more inviting. Image Suggestion: Close-up of a side table with a lamp, book stack, and candle burning. 🌿 Natural Elements Fresh flowers in simple vases, a basket by the door, a vintage wooden bowl — natural elements bring warmth and texture to a cottage home. Even faux greenery works if you mix it thoughtfully. Image Suggestion: Seasonal arrangement on your entryway table or kitchen counter (sunflowers, hydrangeas, or eucalyptus in fall). 📚 Personal Touches Books, artwork, and vintage finds tell your story. A stack of well-loved novels, a thrifted oil painting, or a collection of blue-and-white dishes make a space feel lived in and personal. Cozy isn’t about buying new — it’s about surrounding yourself with what you love. Image Suggestion: Styled bookcase or coffee table vignette with books + art + personal accents. 🧺 Comfort Underfoot Rugs are one of the easiest ways to add coziness to a room. I love mixing a natural jute or sisal rug with a smaller patterned rug layered on top. It adds instant warmth and that collected, cottage feel. Image Suggestion: Angle of your living room or bedroom showing layered rugs. 🍵 Kitchen Comforts A cozy home isn’t complete without the kitchen. For me, it’s having a favorite mug for my morning coffee, simple linen towels, and a candle flickering while I cook dinner. These small details make the everyday feel special. Image Suggestion: Coffee setup with mugs + candle + linen towel. Conclusion At the end of the day, creating a cozy cottage-inspired home isn’t about following strict rules. It’s about layering soft textures, adding warm light, and filling your rooms with pieces that feel personal and meaningful. These cozy essentials are what make our house feel like home — and I hope they inspire you to create the same in your space.
