Our entry hall takes a beating. It’s the center of our home where we drop everything. It’s the one location that you have to pass to get anywhere else in the house and it’s been the hardest to keep looking decent since we’ve lived here.
Our stairs have taken the worst beating of all between moving furniture up and down to construction zones and husbands and dogs that don’t care what their feet or shoes look like.
With the updated electrical wiring and replacing the ceiling fan I really wanted to finally do something with the steps and make this part of our home feel like it belonged. A few weekends ago, I sanded all the treads and risers to clean them up and give me a clean surface to work with.
Once sanded, I swept them with our ShopVac and then washed them with a rag and lightly soaped water. This wasn’t the prettiest of stages but it gave me a fresh canvas to work with.
I then got to painting the risers and then treads and boy did things begin to change. I also decided to paint the newel post and railing. The spindles still need to be painted and I need to finish some of the details on the upper section of stairs above the landing but what a difference a day makes.
I used the same Iron Ore color from our closet and with the crisp white, it looks really crisp and fresh. The walls are a warmer “greyge” color so combined with the oak floors downstairs, the cool colors are balanced out nicely. I can’t wait to share what I have planned for the risers!
