Stitch Fix September 2017

Lifestyle· Self Love

27 Sep
Fall is my favorite time of year so I admit I’m getting more and more excited about my upcoming fixes.  My September Stitch Fix was one of my favorites and a perfect mix of pieces for my life.  It wouldn’t have been a full keeper but with the 25% discount when you keep the entire fix, it was considerably less expensive to keep all five items than to only keep four.
If you haven’t tried Stitch Fix or aren’t sure what it is, it’s an online style service for men and women.  For $20 a month your stylist will pick items for you based on the profile you fill out.  Your stylist will hand pick 5 items for you and when you receive it, you can try everything on at home keep what you want and return the rest.  When you make your selections, you go online leave feedback on all the items and select whether you are keeping or returning.  If you keep at least one item from your fix your $20 styling fee is deducted from the price or an item.  If you keep all five items, you receive a 25% discount on your total order.
It’s simple, it’s easy and in less than 5 minutes, I am able to update my profile each month and leave helpful feedback.  By taking this time, my fixes get better and better.  Over the course of the time I have been using Stitch Fix, I have had just two stylists.  I loved my first and was disappointed when she was no longer available.  My new stylist has proved to be just as amazing at picking pieces that work for my body and my life.  I’m getting exposed to new brands and styles I may not have ever tried otherwise and it’s almost like Christmas every month when that pretty box arrives at my door!

What was in my September Fix:

41Hawthorne – Chaplin Lined Hooded Anorak Jacket

41hawthorn stitchfix jacket

I pinned this jacket months ago after seeing it on Pinterest somewhere.  The gray color appealed to me and the striped liner stood out because it made the jacket a little more unique.  I also don’t have many options in my closet for cute, casual jackets.  This jacket has a slimmer shape that I love because it doesn’t feel too bulky.
Your takeaway:  When going for a common jacket style, look for ones that have a special or unique detail.  Also take your body shape into consideration.  When you are curvy, you don’t want to add layers that are overlay bulky because they can make you look bigger than you are.  Find jackets that have more of a shape to them or go for styles that are cut more slim without being too tight or constricting.

41Hawthorne-Morgan Surplice Blouse

I didn’t love this blouse until I put it on and then I was completely smitten.  Talk about creating the front tuck without actually having to tuck!  I thought the shape would be too bulky for my body but because the material drapes so nicely, the blouse is actually flattering and accentuates the good curves without exposing the not-so-good curves.  I also love that I could wear this blouse with a pencil skirt and blazer for a more dressed-up, professional look but it also looks amazing with a pair of dark skinny jeans.
Your Takeaway:  Don’t be afraid to try something on just because you aren’t sure.  You will never really know how something will work on your body until you actually try it on.   A great blouse is versatile like I explained above.  Go for options that can be worn on their own, or look just as good layered.  Also consider whether they can be dressed up or down to get the most bang for your buck.

Mavi-Freida skinny Jeans

I really didn’t need another pair of skinny jeans but when I put these on, I loved them!  They are a deep, solid blue and are so incredibly soft they almost feel like sweatpants instead of jeans.  They also really seem to hold their shape which is important in a great pair of jeans.
Your Takeaway:  A dark, solid wash jean can look just as polished and professional as dress pants.  When looking for a dressier pair of jeans, avoid any fading or whiskering in the color.

Tahari – Voilet Faux Leather Ballet Flats

I really love me a great ballet flat.  I have bad knees so keels are harder and harder for me to tolerate so I love when I find flats that look sophisticated and are still comfortable.  These flats are a lovely eggplant color which is a perfect color for fall.  The color is also a bit more unique and like nothing I already own.
Your Takeaway:  When looking for flats, avoid style that have a super rounded toe if you are looking for a more polished or sophisticated look.  Rounder toes tend to have a more youthful look to them.  Don’t be afraid to go for a more unique color, shoes are a great way to add a pop of color to a neutral outfit without making you feel like you are too bold or put you too out of your comfort zone.

THML Roonie Emboidered Dress

The length of this dress was questionable for me.  At 40, I’m not super into dresses that are super short but when my stylist recommended wearing leggings under the dress, my wheels started turning and I realized I could wear it as more of a tunic.  The deep teal green color is stunning and such a pretty color for fall.  I think this is going to be a favorite piece of mine this fall.
Your takeaway:  Don’t be afraid to look beyond a piece of clothing no matter what it is.  This dress for example may be too short by itself for me but when I looked beyond the fact that it’s a dress and started thinking of wearing it as if it were a tunic, options began to present themselves that make the look more me and more unique at the same time.  Thinking outside the box is how you create your own personal look that’s just you.
If you are looking for some style help because of time or just feeling lost with your style, you may want to consider giving Stitch Fix a try.

cozy and festive Christmas bedroom in red

5 Ways to Transition Your Decor from Fall to Christmas (Without Feeling Rushed)

There’s something about a cottage-inspired home that instantly feels welcoming. Maybe it’s the layers of soft fabrics, the warm glow of a lamp in the corner, or the way everyday items are displayed with charm. To me, “cozy” doesn’t mean cluttered — it means creating a space where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple beauty of home. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few essentials that always make our home feel inviting and comfortable. These cozy touches are timeless, affordable, and easy to add no matter the size or style of your home. 🛋️ Soft Layers & Textiles Nothing says cozy like a stack of pillows and a throw draped over the sofa. I love mixing neutral tones with subtle patterns — florals, stripes, or checks — to create that layered, collected look. In bedrooms, a quilt or coverlet at the foot of the bed adds both charm and warmth. Image Suggestion: Wide shot of your living room sofa with throws and pillows layered. Pin-worthy vertical image. 🕯️ Warm Lighting Overhead lighting can feel harsh, so I rely on lamps, sconces, and even candles to create a warm glow. A cottage-inspired home shines with layered lighting — the soft glow of a lamp in the evening makes a room instantly more inviting. Image Suggestion: Close-up of a side table with a lamp, book stack, and candle burning. 🌿 Natural Elements Fresh flowers in simple vases, a basket by the door, a vintage wooden bowl — natural elements bring warmth and texture to a cottage home. Even faux greenery works if you mix it thoughtfully. Image Suggestion: Seasonal arrangement on your entryway table or kitchen counter (sunflowers, hydrangeas, or eucalyptus in fall). 📚 Personal Touches Books, artwork, and vintage finds tell your story. A stack of well-loved novels, a thrifted oil painting, or a collection of blue-and-white dishes make a space feel lived in and personal. Cozy isn’t about buying new — it’s about surrounding yourself with what you love. Image Suggestion: Styled bookcase or coffee table vignette with books + art + personal accents. 🧺 Comfort Underfoot Rugs are one of the easiest ways to add coziness to a room. I love mixing a natural jute or sisal rug with a smaller patterned rug layered on top. It adds instant warmth and that collected, cottage feel. Image Suggestion: Angle of your living room or bedroom showing layered rugs. 🍵 Kitchen Comforts A cozy home isn’t complete without the kitchen. For me, it’s having a favorite mug for my morning coffee, simple linen towels, and a candle flickering while I cook dinner. These small details make the everyday feel special. Image Suggestion: Coffee setup with mugs + candle + linen towel. Conclusion At the end of the day, creating a cozy cottage-inspired home isn’t about following strict rules. It’s about layering soft textures, adding warm light, and filling your rooms with pieces that feel personal and meaningful. These cozy essentials are what make our house feel like home — and I hope they inspire you to create the same in your space.
