15 Ways to Update Any Room in Your House on a Budget

At Home· Home Decor

You don’t need a lot of money or time to give any room in your home a makeover.  To prove that, today I’m sharing with you 15 simple and budget friendly tips to help you refresh any space around the house.

Add Interest with Plants

Potted plants are a great way to add a fresh update to any room in your house.  From choosing a stylish planter to deciding on the right plant, adding an organic element can soften even a cold and sterile room.

The best part is that if you don’t have a green thumb and the thought of keeping a live plant healthy turns you off, you can go with a faux plant

Add or Update Lighting

Sometimes the problem with a space comes down to poor lighting.  Especially if a room doesn’t have a lot of natural light, it can feel closed in and smaller than it is.  If that’s the problem with your space, consider updating or adding new lighting.

Consider New Window Treatments

Changing out blinds can be pricey so if that isn’t an option then why not work with what you have?  If possible, consider adding trim, a fabric panel or some tassels to your existing curtains to update or freshen up what’s already there.

If updating blinds, consider pre-made options available in a variety of sizes.  These options are often much more affordable than custom blinds.

Deep Clean  your Space

You keep a clean and tidy house but rooms like bathrooms and kitchens or high traffic areas can get really dirty really quickly.  Consider giving your tired room a deep cleaning from top to bottom because often this will make it not only look fresh but feel fresh too.  This is also a great way to pinpoint areas to update in the future because when everything is polished up and clean, items like hardware or lighting that are worn or outdated will stand out more making them easy to identify.

Open Up a Room

Taking out walls to open up spaces isn’t an option for a quick update but there are other ways to make a room feel more open.  For example, consider adding a large mirror which will help reflect light around your room making it feel brighter and bigger.

Add Trim

There are so many ways to add trim to a room to make a statement without spending a lot of time.  From adding crown molding, building out existing door and window trim, creating a chair rail, applied moldings or a feature wall, the options are endless.

Replace or Add Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are a great way to add color, texture, pattern and style to your space.  This is a great way to infuse some bold personality without a big commitment or investment.  From updating your family room couch to your master bedroom bed, don’t overlook this super simple way to refresh your tired space.

Swap Out Hardware

Kitchens and bathrooms can be pricey rooms to update but updating outdated hardware takes very little time and can be done with minimal tools so anyone can do it.  This simple update can modernize older cabinets and instantly make your space feel fresh.

Paint Something

Paint, even just a little, can go a long way toward making a room feel fresh and new.  Whether painting an entire room, just a feature wall, painting contrasting trim, a single piece of future or some accessories, paint provides you with nearly limitless options.

Rearrange Furniture or Swap Rooms

If you want to update your space without spending any money try rearranging the furniture in your room or swap furniture from room to room.  Sometimes putting things in new places is all you need to make a room feel more fresh.  It’s amazing what a fresh perspective can do!

Add A Gallery Wall

From mismatched frames to streamlined and consistent, a gallery wall is a great way to add personality to a bland space.  From family photos to a collage of art and photos, a gallery wall can be a great way to let your creativity flow.

Put Up Removable Wallpaper

Wallpaper can be a big commitment, messy to put up and even messier to take down so removable wallpaper can be an easy way to add color and pattern without the commitment of regular wallpaper.

You can wallpaper an entire room like your entry, laundry room or bathroom or you can add a feature wall to a bedroom or family room.  You can also get creative by adding it to the back of a cabinet or bookshelves for a more subtle application.

Add or Replace a Rug

Good rungs can be pricey but there are also some great rugs that are also affordable.  A rug, while and investment, can also be an easy way to give a room a new look even without doing anything else and they come in so many styles, colors and patterns.

Add Open Shelves

Open shelves can be a great way to add some dimension to a large, blank wall and it gives you an opportunity to store or display belongings that can also add interest to a room.  They can also be a great way to display collections of things you love.

Add a Fireplace

Rooms without a focal point can feel blah and lack interest.  Adding a fireplace can solve that problem by creating a cozy focal point that the rest of the room can center around.  Fireplace kits come in so many formats today from electric to both vented and ventless gas.  Some construction is required to build them in but it doesn’t have to cost a lot and can make a big impact.

These days as many of us are spending a lot more time at home, finding ways to make our spaces feel updated and fresh can be challenging without spending a lot of money.  Hopefully some of these tips inspire you to add some fresh touches to a tired space in your home.

5 Ways to Transition Your Decor from Fall to Christmas (Without Feeling Rushed)

There’s something about a cottage-inspired home that instantly feels welcoming. Maybe it’s the layers of soft fabrics, the warm glow of a lamp in the corner, or the way everyday items are displayed with charm. To me, “cozy” doesn’t mean cluttered — it means creating a space where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple beauty of home. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few essentials that always make our home feel inviting and comfortable. These cozy touches are timeless, affordable, and easy to add no matter the size or style of your home. 🛋️ Soft Layers & Textiles Nothing says cozy like a stack of pillows and a throw draped over the sofa. I love mixing neutral tones with subtle patterns — florals, stripes, or checks — to create that layered, collected look. In bedrooms, a quilt or coverlet at the foot of the bed adds both charm and warmth. Image Suggestion: Wide shot of your living room sofa with throws and pillows layered. Pin-worthy vertical image. 🕯️ Warm Lighting Overhead lighting can feel harsh, so I rely on lamps, sconces, and even candles to create a warm glow. A cottage-inspired home shines with layered lighting — the soft glow of a lamp in the evening makes a room instantly more inviting. Image Suggestion: Close-up of a side table with a lamp, book stack, and candle burning. 🌿 Natural Elements Fresh flowers in simple vases, a basket by the door, a vintage wooden bowl — natural elements bring warmth and texture to a cottage home. Even faux greenery works if you mix it thoughtfully. Image Suggestion: Seasonal arrangement on your entryway table or kitchen counter (sunflowers, hydrangeas, or eucalyptus in fall). 📚 Personal Touches Books, artwork, and vintage finds tell your story. A stack of well-loved novels, a thrifted oil painting, or a collection of blue-and-white dishes make a space feel lived in and personal. Cozy isn’t about buying new — it’s about surrounding yourself with what you love. Image Suggestion: Styled bookcase or coffee table vignette with books + art + personal accents. 🧺 Comfort Underfoot Rugs are one of the easiest ways to add coziness to a room. I love mixing a natural jute or sisal rug with a smaller patterned rug layered on top. It adds instant warmth and that collected, cottage feel. Image Suggestion: Angle of your living room or bedroom showing layered rugs. 🍵 Kitchen Comforts A cozy home isn’t complete without the kitchen. For me, it’s having a favorite mug for my morning coffee, simple linen towels, and a candle flickering while I cook dinner. These small details make the everyday feel special. Image Suggestion: Coffee setup with mugs + candle + linen towel. Conclusion At the end of the day, creating a cozy cottage-inspired home isn’t about following strict rules. It’s about layering soft textures, adding warm light, and filling your rooms with pieces that feel personal and meaningful. These cozy essentials are what make our house feel like home — and I hope they inspire you to create the same in your space.
